Coupons - How I organize mine

One of the major ways I save alot of money at the grocery store is by using coupons. If you are going to coupon successfully, organizing them in a way that works for you is a must. I've tried the envelope method and the binder method and so far envelopes work best for me.

First you need to get yourself a box of envelopes and a basket/container about the size of a shoe-box. You will want to lable the envelopes with the different catagories to make it easier when you are looking for a specific coupon. Here are some suggested catagories:

  • Bread
  • Cereal
  • Pasta & Rice
  • Frozen Foods
  • Frozen Desserts
  • Fruit & Vegetables
  • Meat
  • Make-up
  • Haircare
  • Toiletries
  • Pet Care
  • Dairy
  • Sauces & Seasonings
  • Chips & Snacks
  • Medicine/Pharmacy
  • Cleaning Supplies
  • Paper Goods (toilet paper/paper towels)
  • Baby Products

Make sure to label them in a way that will make sense to you, it will be easier to find. Once your envelopes are in order you can sort your coupons into them and you're done! Of course there is a bit more upkeep with this system as you will have to periodically go through the coupons and weed out the ones that are expired.

If you need something a bit more organized than just shoving the coupons in an envelope to search through, you can try the binder method. You will need a 1-2 inch 3-ring binder, a package or two of baseball card protector sheets and dividers to lable the different sections. The idea is to put the coupons in the pockets, this way all you will need to do is flip through the pages when you are searching for a specific coupon. If you make sure the expiration date is showing when you place the coupon in the holder it will be a quick process to weed out the expireds. Also, to save space you will want to put all like coupons in the same holders.

The binder method takes a bit more time to set up but once you have it in place it will save you time when planning your shopping trips. The envelope system is quick to set up but you will spend some time searching for your coupons. See what works best for you!
